About the event

Join us for a special book talk exploring the culture of the Jeju haenyeo (female divers), recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, through art, poetry, and stories of lived experience.


The culture of the Jeju haenyeo is about far more than remarkable diving skills. It encompasses generations of knowledge about the sea and its tides, ecological wisdom rooted in taking only what nature can sustain, a strong communal spirit built on protecting one another, and the experiences and skills passed down from mothers to daughters. UNESCO recognized this living heritage for the way the haenyeo have cared for the sea as a shared place of life, played leading roles within their communities, and carried their knowledge and values across generations.


In this conversation, graphic novelist Hongmo Kim and poet and practising haenyeo Eunsil Heo will share stories of the women divers’ work and community, their role in Korea’s anti-colonial…
